Laura Dennis is only 20 years old but already she has tasted some success in the sport of triathlon.
Born and bred in Yeronga, Brisbane and a recent graduate of Somerville House, Laura's passion for triathlon grew out of being a surf live saving nipper at Kurrawah on the Gold Coast. "I enjoyed the surf but the board leg was tough. I wanted to ride and run because swimming was not my strength!"
Laura placed 4th in the Amakusa International triathlon in Japan in September 2014 and she placed top 10 in the Singapore national triathlon 3 weeks later. Both races were part of the ITU Asian Continental Cup series. Her success in Amakusa was significant as it was Laura's first Olympic distance triathlon. Prior to that, Laura had competed over the shorter 'sprint' distance.
Laura's other successes include a top 10 placing in the ITU international junior age group championships in Auckland in 2012, and a silver medal in the Australian Youth triathlon championships at Twin Waters in 2013. In 2013, Laura was awarded the Queensland 'Future State Great' award for secondary school students in Brisbane's Metropolitan East region for her success in triathlon.
Laura is training hard under close guidance of Stephen Moss at the QAS and in May she leaves for France to train and compete in her first European series and French Grand Prix series. She has her hopes and sights set on making the Under 23 World Championships in Chicago later this year.
